Garrya elliptica 'James Roof'
Coast Silk Tassel James Roof
Description
This shrub or small tree grows to 10' tall and wide. It has wavy-edged, evergreen, leathery, gray green leaves with reddish brown stems. The shrub has many stems arching from the base. White flower tassels appear in winter, covering the shrub and slowly turning maroon color. 'James Roof' does best in coastal areas with full sun. However, it tolerates warm inland areas if given afternoon shade and extra summer water. It does best in well draining soil although it will tolerate clay soil. It is wind tolerant. Spectacular during the bloom period. Great plant for screen, hedge or espalier.

Change spray sprinklers to low-flow bubbler or drip systems. Shrubs and trees are ideal candidates for this type of irrigation because the water is applied directly to the root zones.
